Nasa Virtual Glovebox: an Immersive Virtual Desktop Environment for Training Astronauts in Life Science Experiments

چکیده
The International Space Station will soon provide an unparalleled research facility for studying the nearand longer-term effects of microgravity on living systems. Using the Space Station Glovebox Facility a compact, fully contained reach-in environment astronauts will conduct technically challenging life sciences experiments. Virtual environment technologies are being developed at NASA Ames Research Center to help realize the scientific potential of this unique resource by facilitating the experimental hardware and protocol designs and by assisting the astronauts in training. The “Virtual GloveboX” (VGX) integrates high-fidelity graphics, force-feedback devices and realtime computer simulation engines to achieve an immersive training environment. Here, we describe the prototype VGX system, the distributed processing architecture used in the simulation environment, and modifications to the visualization pipeline required to accommodate the display configuration.

Detection and tracking has been an important area of research in computer vision and is central to many NASA applications. The detection and tracking approach discussed will be applicable to the Virtual GloveboX (VGX) project which is an on going research project in NASA.VGX is an advanced simulation system for astronauts to perform precise biological experiments in a glovebox abroad the intern...
متن کاملImmersive 3 D User Interface for Computer Animation Control
This paper describes a virtual reality -based method to control 3D animation. We chose a topic that is particularly difficult to control with traditional desktop applications – a particle system. Particle systems have the potential to create high-quality computer graphics, but they need lots of control data if one wants to create control their dynamics in detail. We have developed a new – more ...
متن کاملA Combined Immersive and Desktop Authoring Tool for Virtual Environments
While frameworks and application programming interfaces for virtual reality are commonplace today, designing scenarios for virtual environments still remains a tedious and time consuming task. We present a new authoring tool which combines scene assembly and visual programming in a desktop application with instant testing, tuning and planning in an immersive virtual environment. Two authors can...
متن کاملSkill Training in Immersive and Nonimmersive Environments
This study investigated the performance of piloting skills under two virtual training environments: immersive versus nonimmersive. Specifically in this paper, climbing and descending tasks while maintaining constant airspeed is reported. Results of experiments show performance differences with subjects under the nonimmersive virtual environment (NIVE) showing a consistent decrease in altitude e...
